♢ Matthias Halloway (400+) ⭒ werewolf ⭒ Idris Elba ♢
♢ name: Matthias Halloway ♢ age: 400+ ♢ faceclaim: Idris Elba ♢ occupation: Lawyer ♢ education: He'd have to be deliberately trying not to pick things up after more than four centuries in all corners of the world, and he's licensed to practice law in over a dozen countries. ♢ family: N/A
♢ history:
NO HOME BUT THE PACK
The New Moon pack extended back centuries, long before Matthias Halloway was born into it, but he could trace his ancestry back to the beginning or close to it. Eventually, people would begin to notice their strangeness: the unnatural strength, the resistance to illness or injury, the way they never aged, so it was one of the first pack tenets to never settle anywhere for longer than it took to be noticed. Over time, this period grew longer as life expectancy shifted, but the core rule stayed the same. They could gather money, resources, and influence, but they could not draw attention to themselves. They could fight to protect, but never for territory. The pack was home, and there was no home but the pack. It was where they took their name: a new moon, invisible but present, unnoticed but still ruling the tide. Matthias spent his formative years in England and would always have a soft spot for it, but it didn't supersede pack law. How ironic that it would be both the beginning and the end for him.
SERVE & PROTECT
Emmett Blackthorn, the founder of the New Moon pack, believed in using their supernatural abilities to make the world better. Protect the pack first, and protect all life past that whenever possible. They turned out generations of guardians and soldiers, and when they found a cause worthy of their talents, they turned the tides of human wars as well. Matthias would need more hands to count all the names he'd picked up and discarded, the captains he'd served, the battles he'd fought. A squad wasn't unlike a pack in that way, just on a smaller scale, and it cemented those bonds to serve alongside his brothers. When they weren't fighting, they were expected to find other ways to serve as well, and Matthias's interests had turned early toward law. He had a certain steady calm and an eye for detail, a way of soothing even the fiercest tempers with that irresistible logic. Licensed to practice in over a dozen countries, Halloway Law firm was new by pack standards, but well-established and respected in modern day London.
RESPECT FOR LIFE
It took Matthias less than a century to work his way up to second in command, and he'd been serving in the role for over two more. He'd never had his eye on being alpha, however; he knew himself well enough to know the role wouldn't suit his or the pack's best interests, and the pack always came first. It had only been a decade since their alpha passed away and Erik Lassiter had stepped into his place. Matthias supported the choice. They'd been raised together, fought together, and he had a charismatic charm and idealism that was good for the pack. If he sometimes led with his emotions, Matthias was usually there to balance him out with that unwavering sense of reason.
NO WEAPONS AMONG WOLVES
The pack had always welcomed new members, born and bitten, under a probationary period. Matthias was against Alex Morgan's entry from the beginning, but for once, that unwavering reason failed him. He couldn't quite put his finger on what bothered him about the man until it was much too late. He came with a handful of his own wolves, ones who'd never had a proper pack. He had a similar charisma to Erik's, but none of his warmth, and Erik had always been the more trusting of the two of them. Pack was home, he insisted, and no wolf would last long without them.
It took longer to see the way Alex and his group sowed discord in the pack. It was subtle at first, but over time there was more in-fighting, more dissent, and more voices against Erik's leadership. Alex argued that too many resources were being used to benefit others rather than the pack. He wanted the pack to settle, to grow, and to gain in power. He treated the bitten, the women, and the elders like second class citizens, and Matthias was dismayed to find there were people who agreed with him. New Moon was never about having power for its own sake, only about using it to protect and serve.
DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR
He expected the challenge for second in command when it came. Pack ranking was rarely about physical strength alone, but ignoring a direct challenge meant dishonor. Matthias was just as ruthless and level-headed in a fight as he was in a courtroom, and still, it wasn't a fight he'd like to revisit. Both sides took heavy damage. He was within pack rights to kill Alex when he won, but again, reason gave him no clear path forward. He felt it deep in his heart that the pack would be safer without Alex in it, but he feared the death would only deepen the rift he'd created in the pack. Furthermore, life was sacred to them. Killing was necessary at times, but only as a last resort. Matthias knew his alpha would preach compassion as surely as he knew that the next challenge would be against Erik. He let him live. He would never regret anything more.
Matthias was still healing from the fight when they came for him, not Alex but his wolves and the dozen or so from New Moon that he'd managed to sway to his side. He wasn't there to see it when Erik lost his challenge, already beaten near to unconsciousness and chained in silver, but the mourning howls from what was left of his pack would echo in his memory for the rest of his life. They shouldn't have let him live, but Alex preferred to gloat as he twisted the pack to his own purposes, killing many who didn't agree with him and subjugating the rest through torture or threats to their loved ones. Too late, he'd seen that perceived lack of warmth was actually hiding a genuinely twisted mind, one without a conscience and that would never stop.
PACK BEFORE ALL
He lost track of the weeks while his body healed everything but the silver, every cry and scream from his pack reminding him that he had a duty to fulfill no matter what it cost him. Even silver couldn't stop a shift. The second time he fought their new alpha, he knew one of them wouldn't walk away. Death before dishonor. Pack before all. Pack law had never told him what to do when those two tenets were in conflict. Weapons were forbidden in challenges among wolves. Breaking that rule to win the fight meant dishonor. His pack would never accept him, not as their alpha, not as their second in command, perhaps not as one of them ever again. There was only a flicker of hesitation in him before he swung the blade that would take his head off. Pack before all. If he had to choose between them and honor, it was no choice at all.
Healing the rift that Alex and his wolves had left in New Moon was no easy task. It meant more death, more excommunication. There were some who wanted Matthias to take his place, honorable challenge or not-- after all, Alex had left honor in the dust some time ago. But there were others, as he'd predicted, who would never accept him. Though he wasn't being forced to leave, Matthias knew it was inevitable that he would. He stayed a year, nearly two, to help re-establish order and advise a new alpha, but even then, he was looking for another pack. New Moon needed to heal, recover, and find itself again, and it couldn't do that as long as he was there, a living reminder of what had once divided them.
The Candentis Lunae pack was even older than New Moon, preceding written history, and they didn't outlaw weapons in a challenge duel. In fact, any wolf who couldn't wield them properly would never rise among the ranks. After their supernatural liaison, Kinship, reached out to him, and after several visits over a series of months, they welcomed him. He would never be second in command there; he would probably never hold any particular rank--not with the Candenti pups four or five times his age all jostling for position--but he'd had enough of leadership for the time being. He could help them, and he could learn from them. He took with him Halloway Law, the silver burn scars roped over his arms and chest, and a few pack members looking to outrun their ghosts.

This is a sideblog, and I follow back from my main @grimmusings. (It's also my canon main, if you're looking for those muses.) Please direct IMs there, since it's easier for me to keep all my messages on one blog. It's also easier to start interactions with me there, where I regularly post meme prompts.
All muses on this blog are original characters with bios linked for each, and I'm happy to write them into AUs and crossovers. Please do not steal or reblog my bios/headcaons/etc., as they belong to me. For a full list of rules, see my main. Honesty hour questions will largely be answered IC and treated as anonymous unless signed by a muse.
I write with faces I like and I adore duplicates, so feel free to consider my faceclaim list as a wanted opposite!
